Matariki, the Māori New Year is an important part of our culture. This full day hands on workshop is separated into two parts. The day involves two core activities that are significant in the celebration of Matariki, that you as educators can learn and take back to teach tamariki and whānau. PART ONE: Poi Harakeke // Flax PoiYou will learn the process of harvesting Harakeke and be guided through a step by step process in creating your own Poi Harakeke. In addition as a group you will co compose a simple waiata to use with Poi and learn to play "Poi Toa". An ancient Māori game which helps develop hand/eye co ordination for all ages. PART TWO:Taryn will guide you through a contemporary star based art activity based on the kōwhaiwhai method of a pattern that repeats and follows on from itself. You will then be able to take this art activity back to the children that you work with and incorporate it into your Matariki education and celebrations. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about Matariki and Māori Art, and will leave the day with a few more tools and knowledge in your own kete.
